Our History
In 1985, a precious literary seed was sown: the King’s Lynn Poetry Festival, born. The shared vision of poet George Macbeth and our very own Tony Ellis came together to unite people through the power of words. In a time when poetry and book festivals were rare, their creation was a welcomed and much needed addition to the creative community.
Two years later, Tony Ellis expanded this gentle gathering into two seasonal delights, including the Fiction Festival. Year after year, these festivals blossomed, drawing renowned writers like Beryl Bainbridge, Malcolm Bradbury, and Louis de Bernières back to their heart.
But as time marched forward, a pause came in the form of adversity. Covid’s shadow dimmed the festivities for a time, yet the spirit endured. Showing unwavering commitment to the literary arts, under the stewardship of Tony Ellis, two more years of festivals ensued, cementing their place and importance in the cultural hub that is King’s Lynn.
In a fitting acknowledgement to his unwavering dedication to literature, Tony Ellis was awarded a British Empire Medal in June 2023.
2024 has brought an opportunity for new beginnings with Sherie Naidoo and Alan Moseley taking up the mantle, ready to carry on the tradition – and forge anew.
